Geographical features
Dolj district is located in southwestern Romania, between 44 ° 42 'north latitude, 43 ° 43' south latitude, 24 ° 16 'east latitude and 22 ° 50' west longitude, and is crossed, from north to south, by the river Jiu and it is the largest district in the southwest area of Oltenia and it is the seventh largest in the country. With an area of 7414 km2, Dolj district occupies 3.1% of the national territory and 25.4% of the South West Oltenia region.
To the north, east and west, the Dolj district borders from west to east on the districts of Mehedinti, Gorj, Olt and Valcea. To the south, Dolj district borders, through the Danube river – as a natural border - with Bulgaria, the districts of Vidin, Montana and Vratsa, with a distance of about 150 km.
The landscape of the district is mostly flat, representing two separate plateaus. In the north part there are higher hilly areas and hilly plateaus and in the western part of the district there is the Romanian Plain.
